In order to face climate change, we have to understand the processes and mechanisms which are triggering it. One central pillar of climate and energy research at FAU is, as a result, fundamental research. Understand bundles the different research areas that FAU professors focus on in this context. As a full-spectrum university, FAU covers all levels from fundamental research to practical application. Thanks to the great innovation ecosystem, FAU guarantees the transfer of fundamental research into practical applications by working together with renowned research institutions and industrial companies. The areas cover geological processes and their effects on ecosystems in the past and in the future, the analysis of the climate system and consequences of human action to fundamental research on new areas of biology, chemistry or physics, such as natural adaptation strategies, materials and interfaces or energy conversion.
